Back Ground of BMDA

Barind region is located in parts of Rajshahi, Chapainawabganj and Naogaon districts and parts of Greater Rangpur, Dinajpur, Bogra and Pabna districts including Natore. The image of this region is completely different than the other parts of the country. The general view of this area was in the presence of high-humid high-field areas, bobla, cactus, and shrubber and occasionally palms of trees burned in the sun. The climate of these areas is very low in the region compared to other regions of rough country. Since the agricultural work was dependent on rainy days in the past, a crop was produced every year, if the crop was not used in due course, crop production was used. As a result, the people of these areas were very poor. Even many warriors were also needy. So the people of this region used to go to regular alarms in search of work. Irrigation work was not possible due to the deep tube-well prevailing in these areas due to soil structure and groundwater level. In 1985, the then BADC engineers invented a deep tube well. Under this project, a project called Varendra Comprehensive Area Development Project (BIADP) was taken under BADC by involving 15 upazilas of Rajshahi, Chapai Nawabganj and Naogaa districts for overall development of Barind area. Under this project, the construction of deep tube wells for irrigation works, and lack of water holding capacity due to lack of water, construction of roads in the rural areas for the re-excavation, plantation and improvement of communication system. Due to the success of the project, Varendra Multipurpose Development Authority (BMDA) was formed in 1992 with the help of BADC officials comprising 25 Upazilas of Rajshahi, Chapai Nawabganj and Naogaa districts for the development of entire Varendra area. The BMDA begins its activities by establishing the following goals:

To ensure food security, conversion of Barindra region to grains
Improvement of climate change and extensive forestry for adapting climate change
Development of communication system in remote areas for marketing of agricultural produce.
Development of standard of living of the public.
With the financial support of the government, due to the above goals and objectives of BMDA, the development of the people of the country, including the development of agriculture, communication system and environment in Varendra area, has greatly improved the socio-economic condition of the people. Now the public does not have to go elsewhere in search of work. With the success of the activities of BMDA, the activities of the authorities in all the districts of Rangpur and Rajshahi have been expanded gradually.
